Isaiah Jones vs the Sea (a 21st Century Odyssey) book 3 chapter 1 Hemispheres•••
Isaiah reclined on the aft-deck of the ship watching as Sybil, Aeon, and Mau Mau the carbon colored 140-pound Cane Corso swam in the surf near the beach less than 100 meters from where the catamaran was anchored just off the coast of Porto Vallarta.
Mau Mau now 2 years old had been rescued from the pound and named by his best friend and lawyer Penelope Stockard Bedowitz. The puppy was only 6 weeks old when Penny brought him home to help cheer up Aeon and the pair were inseparable for the next two years. When ever you saw Aeon, you could be certain that Mau Mau was near by.
Then, for reasons only understood by the dog and Isaiah three months ago when they met him in Galveston and boarded his ship the Exodus the dog was Isaiahs. He stood watch with him and slept with him when he slept.
The Hemisphere was the worlds largest sailing catamaran. More than four times the length of Isaiahs 44-foot sloop Exodus. After the funeral last month Pennies parents insisted, Isaiah take the boat they had purchased for Penelope.
Mister and Mrs Bedowitz seemed relieved when he finally agreed to accept their gift. Isaiah had planned on only staying aboard her until the Exodus refit was complete then they would let the ship and crew go back to being leased out for luxury vacation cruises in the South Pacific.
The ship’s current captain and crew of ten were Australian, British, and South African, made up of six men and four women. All white. Once the crew got word that the ship’s new owner was Isaiah Jones they all assumed that their days working as crew onboard the vessel were soon ending.
“Izzy, Aeon said as they walked through the Pourta Vallarta streets. The crew has been a bit nervous about their job security since you now own the ship.”
“Why would my owning the ship make them uncomfortable?”
“They had an unwritten no black’s policy they code it in polite company by saying exclusive.” Aeon looked at his face and smiled at the boy she had grown up with in East Dallas. He had never even considered such a ridiculous thing.
“I was thinking we should have an all hands meeting tomorrow over breakfast and let everyone know that we are not planning to fire them all for being white.” Aeon brushed a braid from her face glancing up at the emerald-colored eyes surrounded by his black face.
“The company employee’s white peoples from all over the world.”
Isaiah shook his head and grinned.
“I will come to this meeting of yours, but you have to do all the talking.”
Then he paused for a moment before he continued.
But I do have someone in mind for the position of captain and the next chief engineer.
Aeon smiled remembering his old friends from Key-west.
“Well, Beatrix is on a fashion shoot in Singapore and Mara is working as assistant engineer on one of Savannah’s ships currently on a Mediterranean Cruise.”
“So, am I that obvious?”
“Yes, but only to me. I’ll message them both and see what they think. I’ll let the captain and engineer know what their status is in the morning.”
“You know normally this is the sort of thing that Penny would have handled.” Isaiah stared into the distance as sunset approached.
“I know babe, I miss her too.”
Aeon ignored her tears took Isaiah’s hand as they continued to walk the darkening streets.
